INDICATIONS

Pred Forte is an ophthalmic suspension containing prednisolone acetate, a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation in the eyes. This medication is commonly prescribed for conditions such as iritis, uveitis, and conjunctivitis, which involve swelling and redness due to allergic reactions, injury, or surgery. Pred Forte works by reducing the body's immune response in the eyes, helping to alleviate inflammation, pain, redness, and irritation. It is particularly effective for treating inflammation following eye surgeries like cataract removal and for controlling flare-ups of chronic inflammatory eye conditions.

INSTRUCTIONS

Pred Forte is intended for use in the eyes only and should not be ingested or applied to other parts of the body. Before using the eye drops, always shake the bottle well to ensure the medicine is evenly mixed. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops to prevent contamination. To apply, tilt your head back slightly, pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and place the prescribed number of drops into your eye. Close your eyes gently and avoid blinking immediately after application to allow the medicine to spread evenly.

Use the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may need to use the drops multiple times per day. If you are using other eye medications, wait at least five minutes before applying other drops to ensure each medication is fully absorbed. Be careful not to touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eyes or hands, to keep it sterile and avoid infections.

DOSAGE

The dosage of Pred Forte is determined by your doctor based on the severity of the inflammation. Typically, for moderate to severe eye inflammation, the recommended dose is one to two drops in the affected eye(s) two to four times daily. In more severe cases, the doctor may recommend applying the drops every hour. As your symptoms improve, your doctor may reduce the frequency of the dosage gradually to avoid a sudden flare-up of inflammation.

Do not stop using Pred Forte abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this may lead to a worsening of your condition. It’s also important to follow your prescribed schedule carefully. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

STORAGE

Store Pred Forte at room temperature, between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination. Do not freeze the medication, and make sure to keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Check the expiration date on the packaging, and do not use the medication if it has expired. If the suspension changes color or becomes cloudy, dispose of it and get a new prescription.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Before using Pred Forte, inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions, particularly infections in the eye like viral, fungal, or bacterial infections, as corticosteroids can worsen these conditions. It’s also important to mention if you have glaucoma, cataracts, or a history of eye surgeries. Long-term use of corticosteroids in the eye may increase the risk of developing glaucoma or cataracts.

If you wear contact lenses, you should avoid using them while using Pred Forte, as this medication can interact with the lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after applying the drops before putting your lenses back in. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medication, as corticosteroids can affect the baby.

Pred Forte may make your vision temporarily blurry after application, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears. If you develop new or worsening eye pain, vision problems, or signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or discharge, contact your doctor immediately.

SIDE EFFECTS

Like all medications, Pred Forte can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include mild eye discomfort, stinging, or burning upon application, which usually subsides quickly. Some people may experience blurred vision, dryness, or a feeling that something is in the eye. These side effects are generally mild and go away as your body adjusts to the medication.

Serious but rare side effects include increased eye pressure, which can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, and thinning of the eye tissue, especially with prolonged use. Symptoms of increased eye pressure may include eye pain, headaches, or blurred vision. If you notice these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately, as they can lead to permanent vision damage if left untreated.

In rare cases, Pred Forte can cause an allergic reaction, with symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If you experience these symptoms, discontinue use and seek emergency medical help.

Prolonged use of Pred Forte may also increase the risk of developing secondary infections, as corticosteroids can suppress the immune response. This is particularly important if you have any underlying infections in or around your eyes.

In summary, Pred Forte is an effective medication for managing eye inflammation caused by various conditions, but it should be used with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, monitor for any side effects, and keep your follow-up appointments to ensure the health and safety of your eyes.
